VIRGINIA AVENUE SCHOOL CONDOMINIUMS
Michael Curran, a noted local developer, has a vision for this beautifully designed building built in 1911 by William B. Ittner, a renowned architect. The school building was without the sound of familiar steps for 20 years and according to the interior photos taken at the very beginning of the renovations it was in deplorable condition.
The vision has been realized and the 12 various size loft style units are now occupied.
On the tour today are four units representative of the four styles of design. Original oak woodwork, hardwood floors, slate and marble stairways and trim, refurbished doors, coat/hanger shelves and blackboards are found throughout the individual units and common areas. Slate from original classrooms has been used as countertops in the kitchens and some bathrooms. The exposed brick walls, 14 foot ceilings with visible pipes and ductwork and open wall construction add to the eclectic feel of the various units.
The number 2 unit downstairs, on tour today, also has a side entrance on Bowen Street built over an original descending concrete stairway to the building. Unit #2 resident D. Theis, a resident South county for 50 years, returned to the city and street where she grew up.
G. Palmer, in beautifully located Unit #5 also was lured back to the city from the suburbs. This is the largest unit in the building with much restored woodwork and the original front entrance to the school as a sole entrance.
K. Dunham in Unit #8 and S. Wessels next door in Unit #9 represent the 11 dynamic young residents who occupy the 8 smaller units. The 2 remaining units were attractive to 4 empty nesters. We all are the Virginia Avenue School Condo Assoc. and are proud of our building. We appreciate its' history and are all glad to be part of the Carondelet District's continuing evolution. |
